Schwinn 470 Elliptical Trainer Review

The Schwinn 470 elliptical trainer is an all singing, all dancing elliptical with an amazing number of programs and useful extras. It boasts an impressive 29 programs, a USB charging port, an adjustable fan and 4 user capability amongst a plethora of other great features.

You’d certainly struggle to get bored using this machine, but how many of the components are useful, or necessary? With so many key features at well under $1000, it certainly appears to be a real bargain, but are there any underlying issues? Let’s find out.

  • 300 pounds (136 kg) maximum user weight
  • 164 pounds (74.5 kg) assembled weight
  • 231 pounds (104.7 kg) shipping weight

Key Features

  • 29 programs (12 profile; 9 heart rate control (4 Beginner; 4 Advanced; 1 Custom); 4 custom user defined; 2 fitness tests (1 Beginner; 1 Advanced); 1 recovery test; 1 quick start) and additional features
  • Schwinn DualTrack™ two blue backlit LCD window system allows you to monitor up to 13 different display feedbacks

  • USB charging port

  • 20″ stride with Precision Path™ foot motion technology

  • 6 LED tracking lights
  • Ergonomically placed moving and static handle bars
  • 3 speed fan, oversized center mounted water bottle holder and transport wheels
  • Sealed acoustic chamber speakers for big quality sound

The Schwinn 470 elliptical trainer has a lot to offer in the way of comfort, the adjustable fan is a real treat because it packs enough of a cooling punch to actually make a substantial difference to your workout experience (something you don’t often get with value ellipticals).

“Great machine, very stable and I am 240 pounds, so far so good.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

The movement is smooth, quiet and natural due to the eddy current resistance brake system and high inertia perimeter weighted flywheel; you’ll find this remains the same during all levels of program and ramp adjustments.

The 20-inch stride length ensures that most height ranges can enjoy the machine without feeling stretched, strained or restricted. The ergonomically placed handlebars are comfortable to use but the angle they are placed at can make it difficult to avoid collision if you’re pedalling whilst operating a phone or taking a drink (not that you should be operating a phone, really!).

The water bottle holder is within comfortable reach and leaves enough room to place other items alongside it like a phone or keys. The oversized cushion footpads are really comfortable and support your feet well enough to promote longer workouts.

It’s difficult to knock the Schwinn 470 machine in the way of performance because it quite simply delivers everything you need to enjoy challenging and varied workouts. It doesn’t feel as smooth as a gym elliptical but it feels like an excellent quality home elliptical which is exactly what it claims to be.

“It operates very smoothly and quietly, and it offers plenty of features that make your workout as easy or challenging as you wish.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

The movement of the trainer alone is enough to support a full body workout before you’ve even engaged any of the systems or adjustability features available. The 29 programs consist of; 12 profile, 9 heart rate control, 4 beginner, 4 advanced; 1 custom, 4 custom user defined, 2 fitness tests,1 beginner, 1 advanced, 1 recovery test and 1 quick start. You can also use the DualTrack backlit LCD window to track feedback such as; time,  RPM, distance, pulse, speed, calories, resistance level, course profile, heart rate zone indicator,  % complete indicator,  intensity meter,  user indicator and  goal achievement.

A great feature of the Schwinn 470 elliptical trainer is the integrated USB port which gives you the ability to download workout information onto Schwinn Connect and My Fitness Pal; a compatible app that you can use to track your fitness progress (which is also completely free to use).

The 4-user profile capability is useful for those who purchase the machine for the whole family to use. The heart rate sensors on the handlebars are OK and the product does have telemetry capability but this feature isn’t useful if you’ve purchased the product without the compatible chest strap (an optional extra).

Ease Of Use & Convenience

The Schwinn 470 is very easy to set up although the actual manual for use (once set up) does not come included in the pack so you have to download it from the website or order it from customer services. This isn’t unusual for a modern day elliptical trainer, but it can be annoying if you’re more a ‘hard copy’ kind of person.

“I assembled the unit myself in a little over two hours.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

The Schwinn 470’s features are all easy to operate and the control panel is particularly simple to use (despite initial appearances), although it could easily be simplified with a few less directional arrows.

The moving mechanical parts do need to be greased regularly which can be a little annoying, but ensures the parts stay running smoothly and protects the rest of the machine from damage.

The speaker system is quite an improvement on previous Schwinn models and does create a sound that is off higher quality than you’d typically get from phones or tablets. It couldn’t be called ‘big sound’ as Schwinn describes but it is more than acceptable.

As described above, the incredible range of programs, adjustability and customization options mean you really shouldn’t find yourself bored during your training sessions. Having a rack that holds a tablet is also a great way to pass the time during your workout, but it’s a shame it covers the feedback information and isn’t extendable above the monitor.

The Final Verdict

“Trust me on this one, because you will love this machine!” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

The Schwinn 470 elliptical trainer offers truly exceptional value for money. The programs and adjustability features are all useful, the stride is a few extra inches more than you tend to get with standard ellipticals (20-inches) and all of the extras that come with the product are genuinely useful and work well.

The build quality of the machine is of excellent quality (as you’d typically expect from Schwinn) and with a generous warranty, you can rest assured that your elliptical machine will work perfectly for years to come, even if something does happen to go wrong.

The fact that the Schwinn 470 features a number of bells and whistles (such as the sound system) is a great bonus and certainly ensures that the machine is worth every dollar.

Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer Review

The Schwinn 420 elliptical trainer is a budget, streamlined machine designed to deliver exceptional workout results with a bi-directional pedal system, 8 workout programs, 20 resistance levels and an in-built fitness test, all provided at an extremely affordable and reasonable price.

It’s a modern-looking elliptical trainer offering an impressive range of entertainment and comfort related extras in the way of an in-built speaker system, cooling fan and multifunctional console that has different areas able to hold various media such as e-readers, tablets or even just a good old fashioned book.

It’s also a high performance machine with plenty of frills, but do the frills deliver or detract from the usability and overall  quality?

Dimensions & Technical Specifications

  • 26 (width) x 62 (length)  x 71  (height) inches (66 x 158 x 180 cm)
  • 300 pounds (136kg) maximum weight limit
  • 164 pounds (74kg) assembled weight
  • 167 pounds (75.7kg) shipping weight

Key Features

  • Biomechanically designed linkages means a comfortable and natural 18-inch elliptical path
  • Ergonomic handles for multiple workout positions
  • Speakers and MP3 music input port in a console that holds magazines, eBooks or other media in multiple locations
  • Bi-directional pedalling allows you to pedal forward or backward to target specific muscle groups.
  • Perimeter weighted flywheel with high inertia for smooth, consistent workouts
  • Oversized stabilizers and levellers that are built-in for a solid workout platform
  • 8 workout programs, 6 course profiles, fitness test, and custom workout
  • Integrated grip heart rate system
  • 16 resistance levels

The Schwinn 420 elliptical trainer has a very chic, modern look to it which doesn’t necessarily suggest it will be the most comfortable machine to use. Despite appearances though, it is in fact extremely user-friendly and the oversized stabilizers and levellers alone mean the machine feels extremely sturdy once set up, so you really do feel comfortable and safe working out full throttle from the onset with no worry that the machine will topple or break.

“ I really like the arched foot pedals. The motion feels more natural and somehow better on the knees.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

The bi-directional pedals are designed to work multiple muscle groups but they also contribute to the workout comfort levels as they have been designed to move and glide smoothly, which they do combined with the perimeter weighted flywheel system and biomechanically designed linkages.

Unfortunately the cooling fan does fail to move any air and cool the user down, which is a real shame considering the effort has been made to build one in. Even on its highest setting it can’t really be felt at all, so it could be considered an irrelevant feature overall.

“ The motion of the machine is whisper quiet.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

Despite a few disappointments in the way of entertainment (which we discuss further below), you will not feel as though you are using a budget elliptical in the way of performance and usability. The Schwinn 420’s movement is smooth, the machine sturdy and the inbuilt programs (combined with the bi-pedals) give you a fantastic facility to exercise different muscle groups alongside a decent selection of workout options which are comparable with any high-end elliptical trainer.

What’s more, the ergonomic handles provide you with the opportunity to work your arms in multiple positions, enabling you to really hone in on specific muscle groups and customize your workout even more.

The actual workout programs are very much a base for you to build on, providing you with standard cross training systems that combine with the bi-pedal and ergonomic handles to facilitate every workout option you might need.

The fitness test is a really useful feature for those looking to improve their fitness levels and skill set, although the system itself only allows for one user to save their customized program and progress which can be a little irritating if more than one person in the household uses it regularly.

Ease Of Use & Convenience

The Schwinn 420 elliptical trainer is very easy to set up considering all the parts it consists of; it also comes with transport wheels which means you can change its location if you want to.

The display screen is user friendly and simple to use but is not backlit which could prove to be a problem depending on the lighting in the room you use it in. It is also quite small and faces at an angle (alongside the reading rack and EBook holder) which means those over 6 foot may find viewing difficult.

The machine also proves a little difficult for shorter users because of the arm reach, although the ergonomic handles go some way towards alleviating this problem. The foot pedals could benefit from a gel cushion but this isn’t too much of an issue if you wear good training footwear throughout the workout.

“Has a nice e-book reader, which allows me to put my Amazon Kindle Fire on it, surf the internet, watch movies, listen to music, etc” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

The included entertainment features (or lack thereof) are where the Schwinn 420 really falls short. The inbuilt speakers work well, but give out a low standard of sound. The fan (as mentioned above) really doesn’t contribute to a cooling system and the workout programs can be a little complicated to use.

The one positive entertainment feature is the multiple EBook and media stand options; the various potential EBook placements around the console mean you’ll have no trouble setting up your own entertainment on this machine.

If it is purely used as an exercise machine you will certainly have enough customisable options and programs to keep your exercise routines varied and entertaining.

  • Frame: 5 years
  • Mechanical & Electrical: 1 year
  • Wear Parts: 90 days
  • Labor: 90 days

The Final Verdict

For under $1000 dollars, the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Machine is incredible value for money and really offers an attractive range of features for the price. There are a few notable issues with the entertainment on offer, but the issues don’t negatively affect the elliptical itself or its quality as a high performance machine.

“Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a well-built budget elliptical.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

It should be noted that the Schwinn 420 does have an 18-inch stride length which, while perfectly adequate for most, may feel a little short for those taller users (i.e. anyone over the 6 foot mark). If you’re looking for a machine with an adjustable stride length, you might want to consider the Schwinn 460, although this does come in at around double the price of the 420.

One thing’s for certain, you simply cannot question the value for money with the Schwinn 420 Elliptical; it’s not ‘all singing’ entertainment-wise but it is ‘all dancing’ (and more) as far as its sleek sturdy design and customizable features are concerned.

Diamondback Fitness 1260Ef Elliptical Trainer Review

The Diamondback Fitness 1260Ef Elliptical Trainer is an all round, high performance machine with a large amount of scope for customized workout options. The machine includes 15 workout programs and 20 different resistance levels meaning you get a huge amount of choice in how much you want to vary your workouts, making them extremely easy, extremely difficult or pretty much anything in between.

The machine also features inbuilt heart sensors on the handlebars as well as a heart monitoring chest which works great when used alongside the heart rate bar graph display.

It may not have much in the way of fancy frills or technical features such as music systems or a cooling facility, but it does have everything you need (and more) to enjoy a wide range of challenging workouts with a difficulty level of your choosing.

Dimensions & Technical Specifications

  • 27.5 (width) x 69.5 (height) x 65 (depth) inches
  • 325 pound (147kg) maximum weight limit
  • 275 pound (124kg) packed weight
  • 245 pound (111kg) assembled weight

Key Features

  • 19-inch stride length
  • Krayton rubber comfort grips
  • Handheld pulse sensor and free compatible chest strap
  • 15 workout programs
  • Inbuilt reading rack
  • Pause mode with five minute program saver
  • Personal trainer function
  • Extra wide foam cushion EVA foot pads
  • 20 different resistance levels
  • Alphanumeric message display with program instructions
  • 4 Data display windows with individual Select button for each data group
  • Easy to select program buttons with LED indicators
  • Heart rate bar graph display

Physical comfort is almost perfect with the Diamondback 1260Ef; the extra wide foam cushion footpads and Krayton rubber comfort grips make for an ease of use and physical comfort level typical of higher end machines.

“The 19 inch stride is very comfortable for someone 6 feet tall.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

The specification boasts ‘permanently lubricated polymer bearings’ and it’s right to boast, it makes for a very smooth movement that really supports full strength workouts without any damaging musculoskeletal jerking or jolting.

The only downside is the fact that the arm reach appears to have been designed primarily for those over 5′ 7″, which can be a problem if you’re shorter than average and purchased the 1260f elliptical specifically for a full body workout.

The performance of the Diamondback 1260Ef is where it really comes into its own. It’s almost as though the manufacturer bypassed the extras completely in order to provide exceptional performance features at such a reasonable price. It’s safe to say that the users workout experience really has been the true focus with this machine.

“It’s very smooth, very quiet, and feels very solid.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

You’ve really every reason to use it indefinitely without getting bored because of the various different workout options available. Not only do you have five basic workouts using the quick start option; manual, random cross, interval, hillclimb and sprint, you also have five workouts specifically focused on cardio; target heart rate, heart rate interval, fat burner, heart rate hill and cardio. You can also use three different cross trainer workouts; glute burner, quad builder and total trainer. The cross trainer workouts in particular get your entire body working right away, the resistance really pushes your glutes while your arms feel the burn with the smooth, lengthy handlebar glide.

“The 19 inch stride is very comfortable for someone 6 feet tall.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

The inbuilt warm up and cool down options are not to be discounted either, there’s a lot of evidence to show your body really benefits from these processes, minimizing muscle strain and post-workout stiffness.

All of these programs are easily accessed and used without even starting to customize programs using the 20 levels of resistance. The free heart monitoring chest strap is a nice touch, as handlebar grip sensors are notoriously inaccurate, it would also be a shame not to be able to track heart rate with five programs designed specifically for cardio. It is unquestionably a machine built to do exactly what it says on the tin with absolutely no messing around.

Ease Of Use & Convenience

“It took about 3 hours to assemble and everything worked the first time.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

At 245 pounds assembled, the Diamondback Fitness 1260Ef  elliptical trainer is certainly no lightweight to move. You’ll want to set this up exactly where you intend to use it unless you have a strong friend to help you move it around.

The step by step instructions (detailing each assembly part) make for quick and easy construction with little to no fuss which is definitely a bonus when lots of small parts are involved.

The drinks holder is just underneath the console which is within easy reach, the reading rack is OK and works fine but could be considered a little irrelevant for users who would more than likely prefer a more modern extra.

If you’re looking for a straightforward workout with a huge amount of variation possibilities, this is the machine for you. If you’re looking for an all singing, all dancing elliptical – you might find yourself a little unsatisfied with this machine.

The green LED dot matrix profile combined with the data display windows and LED program indicators mean you’ll always know how your workout is doing, but you’ll need to provide any extra entertainment yourself.

  • Frame: Limited Lifetime
  • Parts: 3 years
  • Labor: 1 year

The Final Verdict

“Overall, a great product at a great price.” – Click here to read the full review on Amazon.

The Diamondback Fitness 1260Ef elliptical trainer is a robust, sturdy, comfortable and well designed workout machine. It certainly won’t tick any modern entertainment boxes but, you’ll get all you’ve paid for from the workout program options alone.

Many of the more expensive elliptical models can short change the user on the ellipticals basic workout features in order to fit in as many flashy extras as possible. The Diamondback Fitness 1260Ef Elliptical delivers where it counts, in the exercise department. It will most definitely deliver on results and durability which, in our opinion, makes it well worth the money in that area alone.
