The Horizon Fitness T101-04 Treadmill is a budget machine which is a little bit more expensive than the lowest priced models. The machine boasts; 30 inbuilt workout options, MP3 compatibility and inbuilt speakers, a foldaway option, lifetime frame and motor warranty and treadbelt cushioning. At around $630 dollars you’re paying around $230 dollars more than the cheapest treadmills. What extras are you paying for? Is it worth paying the extra money?

The treadmill is well built and does stand by the manufacturers ‘Super Stable’ promise. Even at maximum use you don’t feel as much of a pounding effect as you do on similar models. The treadbelt is comfortable and remains smooth alongside the quiet 2.25 HP motor, although the longevity of this ‘whisper quiet’ sound is questionable. The 20 x 55 inch belt size is adequate and only 5 inches less in length than the majority of standard treadmills, only tall users with large strides wanting to run at maximum capacity may find it a bit of an issue.
The Coolfit fan is pretty weak and couldn’t be considered a top of the range cooling system.
The key performance feature on this treadmill are the 30 different workout programs which are; 30 Programs – Manual, Steps (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000, 10,000), Calories (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600), Distance (1mi, 2mi, 5k, 5mi, 10k, 8mi, 15k, 10mi, 20k, Half Marathon), and Intervals (Speed, Peak, and Endurance). This feature is what makes it stand out from similar models that cost a few hundred dollars less. Are the programs worth the extra money? Having a variety of inbuilt options for your workouts is never a bad thing as you can simply press a button and have the machine do all the guesswork for you. However, these programs are incredibly unimaginative and pretty lack lustre. They really don’t use any interesting variations or incline/ speed changes and couldn’t be considered well designed, well thought out workouts.
You also have the ability to track your progress on the machine using the feedback on the monitor which displays; Speed, Incline, Distance, Calories, Time and Heart Rate although heart rate is monitored using the pulse grips on the machine which are notoriously inaccurate.
The 10% incline, 10 mph maximum speed and the ample treadbelt space mean you do have a decent amount of workout options to utilize and customize your own workouts.
Ease Of Use & Convenience
The Horizon Fitness T101-04 has a foldaway option which means it is easier to store than models that don’t fold, although the fold is at an angle so it does take up more room when folded than you might think.
The machine is easy to assemble and comes with some well written instructions, it can take a little bit of time to run smoothly; make sure the entire bottle of lubricant is applied when you set it up to ensure it is adequately greased. The water bottle holder is a good size and within convenient reach and the holders can also accommodate remote controls and other items as they are nice and deep.
The user interface is as simple as they come, which is a positive in that it is super easy to use and negative because you’re not getting many useful features within the console itself.
The entertainment on this machine is limited to a reading rack and iPod/ MP3 compatible speakers which connect using a jack. The speakers aren’t particularly useful because the sound is not very high quality at all, you could have music on as background noise but couldn’t enjoy your favorite songs on this sound system. The reading rack is a good size and can accommodate plenty of different sized items; books/ tablets etc. One thing you probably won’t find entertaining is the loud barrage of beeps you continually get from this machine.
Whichever feature you want to use you are met with a loud beeping which can be turned down but sets back to loud when you turn the machine off, it also connects to the speakers as well so if you have the music on loud you also have to deal with loud beeping.
- Frame and Motor- Lifetime
- Parts- 1 year
- Labour- 1 year
The Final Verdict
The Horizon Fitness T101-04 Treadmill is in a bit of an odd place when it comes to treadmill price structures and what you are getting for your money. For a few hundred more dollars you are essentially getting a ton of preset workout programs, a bigger running surface and a better motor. But are they worth the extra money? The preset workout programs are not worth the extra money as they are so monotonous, the bigger running surface and better motor are worth more money but those who may want to use these features to their full capacity will more than likely just save a bit more and invest in a stronger machine with the full 60 inch length treadbelt. The Horizon Fitness T101-04 can only be described as a mediocre treadmill with a slightly bigger bite than similar budget models. Purchase if you want a bit more strength and room to your treadmill.
